World Rally Championship 2009
The World Rally Championship comes to Ireland during January 29th - Feb 1st.
The Irish leg has replaced the traditional Monte Carlo Rally in the 2009 WRC, and is seen as a major endorsement of Rally Ireland by the sport following its debut in November 2007.
The event route includes eight counties, both north and south of the border and the rally will conclude on Sunday with a Super Special Stage in Donegal Town.
Rally Headquarters will be in the Clarion Hotel, Sligo, with the Service Park adjacent to it in the Institute of Technology.
The WRC consists of 16 rounds which take place in five continents. Each Rally is competed over three days; each day is known as a leg and drivers and co-drivers compete over Special Stages, which are varying distances of terrain. A typical WRC rally will have between 15 and 25 Special Stages and the crew with the fastest cumulative time over these is the winner. Points are accumulated based on the position finished in on each round and the World Champion is the crew or manufacturer with the highest number of points at the end of the season.
In 2007, Rally Ireland was ranked as the 2nd most successful rally in the World Rally Championship (WRC). If visiting the rally locations, please follow the instructions of marshals and remain safe. Cars travel at high speeds and can often leave the road.
