Once part of the lands belonging to the Plunkett family, Loughcrew has a rich history and is home to Loughcrew Cairns, the largest complex of passage graves in Ireland. Situated in a magical valley at the foot of the Loughcrew Megalithic Cairns, which are Ireland's largest network of Megalithic passage tombs. Loughcrew Cairns were built around 4000bc as burial chambers but may possibly be the oldest dwellings in the world yet are relatively unknown in archaeological terms. Set in beautiful landscape with a view of a reputed 17 counties, these cairns remain unspoiled and unvisited compared to more well-known sites.

The gardens of Loughcrew have been maintained and created by generations of the Naper family since 1660. Features of the gardens include the ’Temple of the Rains’, a crannog, a medieval moate, the Plunkett family church and Tower House as well as being home to a fairy statues and contemporary sculptures. Children are welcome and the gardens have a playground and plenty of features to capture their interest. Ideal for family outings or school groups, there are woodland walks, statues and colourful toadstools to be discovered. The gardens are also the location for the Loughcrew Garden Opera, held there every summer since 2000. Guests can picnic in the grounds or wine and dine in marquees.
Loughcrew Garden Visitor Centre is modelled on a nearby classical gate lodge and has refreshments, shopping and information on the cairns, gardens and church.
Lake Walks
The Lake Walk is about four kilometers long and can take anywhere between one 1 hour 45 minutes and 2 and a half hours. The path is marked with red fairy arrows. Please take care to open and close all gates.
Nature Walks for Children
Children of all ages have a natural awe and wonder at Nature and enjoy exploring it. Open to children age 6 to 12 years old.
