Dating back to the 15th century, this impressive castle overlooks Lough Erne on the West Side of Enniskillen. Enniskillen Castle, situated beside the River Erne in County Fermanagh, was built almost 600 years ago by Gaelic Maguires. Guarding one of the few passes into Ulster, it was strategically important throughout its history. In the 17th century it became an English garrison fort and later served as part of a military barracks. The museum aims to promote the cultural richness of County Fermanagh to as wide an audience as possible. Our permanent galleries contain award-winning displays on Fermanagh's history, wildlife and landscape and a rolling programme of special exhibitions throughout the year featuring art, archaeology, local history and cultural heritage. There are several different buildings located within the Enniskillen Castle complex and each building is devoted to a part of the story of the castle and the county. We organise many different kinds of events, including lectures, Living History events, craft demonstrations, storytelling, poetry and prose readings, various commemorative events and many types of family entertainment programmes during the summer, at Christmas and at Halloween. Our education programmes meet the needs of those in formal education as well as providing resources for life-long learning.
