A World Heritage site, National Nature Reserve and Northern Ireland's premier tourist attraction. The spectacular complex of some 40,000 basalt column 'stepping stones' lead from the cliff foot and disappear under the sea. The formations that make up the Causeway were created by volcanic activities during the Tertiary Period, some 50-60 million years ago. This phenomenal site has been attracting visitors worldwide ever since a Dublin spinster captured the Causeway's magnificence with her realistic sketches. There is a Visitor Centre located on the cliff, just 1 km from the site itself. This Visitor Centre is open daily all year round and makes for the perfect starting point for walks along the coastal and cliff top paths. As well as a range of other facilities visitors can avail of a 12-minute audio-visual presentation, with commentary available in 5 European languages. You will be brought through the origins of the Giant's Causeway, giving insights into local folklore and scientific theory; and the many other attractions of the Causeway Coast and Glens of Antrim area are also pointed out to make sure that you make the most of your trip. The centre now includes a tourist information centre (where visitors can get free information on the local area, where to eat and much more), a 90 seat restaurant, three souvenir shops and a Bureau de change. Wheelchair access is also available.
