Lough Ree Yacht Club
Is the second oldest Yacht Club in the world, dating back to 1720 or earlier. Today the club has a fine clubhouse, with a slipway, boat houses and jetties. The members sail the Shannon One Design, the Shannon’s own special craft and also Mirrors, Optimists and a general Cruiser class. Within L.R.Y.C. a large number of Juniors sail in the various fleets. Most who begin their sailing are immediately introduced to the Optimist and from there progress to the Mirror/420 or Laser Class. The Club has made rapid strides in recent years, particularly by the acquisition of more property, and the extension and improvement of the premises and provision of fixed and floating jetties. Sailing activity is currently at a high level and the Club continues in the tradition of its 237 years to be a convivial centre of sailing on Lough Ree and the host to many important sailing events.
