Blackrock Castle Observatory

Blackrock Castle , Castle Road, Blackrock , Co Cork
Ph: 021 435 7917

Blackrock Castle was originally built on the Lee in 1582 by the citizens of Cork as a watch tower and fort to guard the river against pirates and other invaders. In an exciting collaboration between Cork City Council and the Cork Institute of Technology, Blackrock Castle is now known as Blackrock Castle Observatory (BCO), the Space for Science. Cosmos at the Castle is an award-winning interactive astronomy exhibit BCO. Four cinema sized screens share information on the Big Bang. In the cinema room you will find an interactive game called The Comet Chaser which challenges you to save the Castle from colliding with a comet. This exhibit is suitable for all ages. BCO also houses a team of scientists working searching for planets around distant stars. Visitors can also enjoy both local and Italian dishes at the Castle Bar and Trattoria in the fine surrounds of our riverside courtyard.
